The age of wonder and first long books read aloud. We plant the seeds of myth, faith, and fairy tale before the world starts arguing about them.
Children become readers in their own right. They want maps, codes, voyages, and brave companions. We give them quests with consequences.
The first stirrings of the moral life. We hand them stories of trial and return — Odysseus, Joan of Arc, Lincoln — and let them try the path on for size.
Tragedy enters. They are old enough now for Shakespeare uncut, for the long shadow of the World Wars, for music that knows how to grieve.
On the threshold of adulthood. The great books, the founding documents, the cathedral, the symphony. The works that will keep speaking after we are gone.
